Standard Bank Namibia Hands Over Homes in Omusati, Advancing National Housing Goals

Standard Bank Namibia, through its flagship Buy-a-Brick initiative, has handed over 15 new affordable homes in Onandjaba as part of a broader housing project that delivered 84 houses to Namibian families, reinforcing the critical role of public-private partnerships in addressing the country's housing shortage and supporting Namibia's long-term development agenda.

The homes funded through Standard Bank Namibia's Buy-a-Brick initiative were made possible through proceeds raised at the bank's annual Corporate and Investment Banking Padel for Purpose event, supported by corporate partners including Old Mutual Namibia and longstanding Buy-a-Brick partner Ninety One Namibia.

The handover comes at a time when housing remains one of Namibia's most pressing socio-economic challenges. Access to safe, affordable and dignified housing is increasingly recognised as a catalyst for improved health, education, economic participation and overall quality of life, making it a critical component of the country's development priorities.

This aligns closely with the objectives of the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), which places strong emphasis on human development, community resilience, inclusion and improved living standards for all Namibians.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Emeritha Iita, Standard Bank Namibia's Branch Manager in Outapi, said the initiative demonstrates how collective action can create meaningful and lasting change.

"Housing is about far more than bricks and mortar. It is about dignity, security, stability and opportunity. Every home handed over today represents a family moving from uncertainty to greater security and a stronger foundation for the future. Through Buy-a-Brick, we are bringing together communities, corporate partners and civil society to address one of Namibia's most important development challenges."

Launched in 2015 in partnership with the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia and the Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG), the Buy-a-Brick initiative was established as a practical response to Namibia's housing shortage. Over the past decade, the initiative has raised more than N$27 million and contributed to the construction of more than 740 homes across the country, providing hundreds of families with access to affordable housing.

The Governor of the Omusati Region, Honourable Immanuel Shishiweni Shikongo, who officiated the handover, highlighted the importance of collaboration between government, communities and the private sector in accelerating housing delivery and improving living conditions for low-income households.

"Projects such as this speak directly to the objectives of the Sixth National Development Plan, which seeks to improve the quality of life of Namibians through inclusive development, stronger communities and sustainable livelihoods. Every home handed over today represents a step towards a more secure and prosperous future for Namibian families. It is through partnerships such as these that we can accelerate progress towards addressing Namibia's housing needs and creating more resilient communities," said the Governor.

Importantly, the project reflects Namibia's growing commitment to community-led development. Beneficiaries actively participated in various stages of construction, including brickmaking, trench digging, material transportation and building activities, demonstrating the power of collective ownership and local participation in addressing housing challenges.

For Standard Bank Namibia, the initiative forms part of the bank's broader commitment to creating positive social impact and supporting sustainable development outcomes.

"At Standard Bank, we believe growth is measured not only in economic terms, but also in the opportunities we help create for people and communities. Housing is one of the most powerful investments a society can make because it creates the foundation from which families, communities and economies can thrive," added Iita.

As Namibia continues to confront a significant housing backlog, partnerships such as Buy-a-Brick illustrate how the combined efforts of government, the private sector, civil society and communities can contribute to practical, scalable and sustainable solutions that support national development objectives and improve the lives of ordinary Namibians.
