Standard Bank Namibia Warns Public of Deepfake Scam Misusing CEO’s Identity

Standard Bank Namibia wishes to alert the public to a fraudulent social media post currently circulating online, including on Facebook, which falsely depicts the Bank’s Chief Executive, Mr. Erwin Tjipuka, promoting what appears to be a pyramid investment scheme.

The video and accompanying posts are deepfakes; digitally manipulated content created to deceive viewers by falsely attributing endorsements or statements to well-known individuals. Mr. Tjipuka has not participated in, endorsed, or advised on any investment opportunity outside the official offerings of Standard Bank Namibia.

Standard Bank Namibia unequivocally distances itself and its leadership from this misleading and malicious content.

“Our CEO has not made any such statements, and we strongly condemn the use of deepfake technology to mislead the public. We urge all customers and members of the public to remain vigilant and to verify information directly with trusted sources”, said Elzita Beukes, Standard Bank Senior Manager: Public Relations and Communication.

How to recognise Deepfake and Social Media Investment Scams

The sophistication of scams circulating online continues to increase, and perpetrators frequently impersonate reputable institutions or leaders to gain trust. Standard Bank Namibia urges the public to be cautious and to look out for the following warning signs:

  • Unrealistic Promises: Guaranteed returns, quick profits, or risk free investments are classic hallmarks of a scam.
  • Urgency or Pressure to Act Immediately: Scammers often insist that you must “act now” to secure an opportunity.
  • Poor Video Quality or Inconsistent Facial Movements: Deepfakes may show unnatural blinking, mismatched lip-syncing, or distortions around the face.
  • Unverified Social Media Pages and Links: Scammers use newly created pages or impersonated profiles to push fake investment offers.
  • Requests for Upfront Payments: Legitimate financial institutions will never require upfront fees via social media to “activate” investment opportunities.

How to Protect Yourself:
Verify all information through Standard Bank Namibia’s official channels, including the website (www.standardbank.com.na) and Customer Contact Centre (92860). Report any suspicious posts, messages, or profiles directly on the platform where they appear. Avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or sharing personal or banking information online and always consult your bank before engaging with or investing in any scheme promoted via social media.

Standard Bank remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and protecting customers from fraud. We continue to collaborate with law enforcement, regulators, and industry partners to curb digital fraud and enhance public awareness around emerging cyber threats.
