Namibia is a country known for its contrasting landscapes, unlimited elbowroom, vast deserts and an annual quota of 300 days of sunshine. The desolate Namib Desert is said to be the oldest in the world, with its high dunes and awe–inspiring sense of space.

The central plateau, with its thorn bush savannah and rugged mountains, rising abruptly from the plains, gives way to the majestic Fish River Canyon in the south, the second largest after the Grand Canyon. In the north of the country, landscapes range from dense bush and open plains of the great Etosha Pan, to woodland savannah and lush vegetation. Dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone, prehistoric rock art, the ancient fossil plant, Welwitschia mirabilis, are all witness to the timelessness of this country. Namibia is divided into three distinct topographical areas: the Namib Desert, Central Plateau and Kalahari Desert.

According to the last population census conducted in 2001 Namibia has 1,826 million people. The population density is one of the lowest in the world at less than two people per square kilometer. Its capital, Windhoek, is a prosperous modern city that has preserved many colonial–era buildings.

Our presence in Namibia
Standard Bank has been in Namibia since 1915, the first commercial bank to open its branch in L?deritz on 19 August 1915. In 2005 Standard Bank therefore celebrated 90 years of banking and looked back at a rich and diverse history in Namibia.

Some of the highlights of the past years include:
  • having the widest-ranging branch network;
  • offering the most ATMs and highest availability
  • employing the first Namibian as managing director;
  • winning the ” Namibia Best Bank” award in Euromoney’s Awards for Excellence 2006 for the third year in a row.
  • Winning ”The Banker’s” Bank of the year award 2006
  • being part of the Standard Bank Group that has been named the ”Best Cash Management Bank in Africa” by Global Finance magazine. In an exclusive survey published in the magazine’s March 2006 issue, the bank has also been selected as the ”Best Bank for Payments and Collection in Africa” for the second consecutive year. Furthermore, the bank was awarded the ”Best CLS (continuous linked settlement) Bank Offering” award
From humble beginnings of three branches a fully fledged bank emerged. Today we have 22 branches, 17 service centres and 115 ATMs throughout Namibia.

Continued commitment
We take pride in always having been committed to bringing banking to Namibians all over the country and to the previously ’unbanked’ population. We will continue this commitment in the years to come.
